LEARNING IN THE POST OFFICE

Hello everybody!

Today I would like to talk about one way to make kids work mathematical contents without them realising.

In the school that I visited during my practicum, they had a "playing corner" where the kids used to go after finishing a task or during breaks between activities. This corner was transformed every month to a different thing. During the time I attended the school, the corner became into a supermarket, a doctor's clinic, a post office, a veterinary clinic... Kids used to love going there because everything looked very real, and every detail was very authentic.

The one that I liked the most was the post office. There were so many different options for the students to do. As clients, they could: write a letter to any of their friends or family members, send parcels of different shapes and weights, pay with fake bills and coins, check out how long would their friends have to wait to receive a package and how much would it cost then... Also as a post office worker, they could: count the money and give the appropriate change, put the money in the cash machine, weight the parcels, offer some sales, measure the parcels indicating their shapes too, putting on stamps, and get the mailbox ready.

As you can see, a post office in the classroom is a wonderful way to work numerous measurement contents as weight, length, capacity, time, money... in addition to other contents of different areas as writing, reading, drawing, communicating, among others.

Of course, children will need guidance at the beginning, so they can learn how everything works and which are the roles they can play, but after a few weeks they will be able to play by their own and have fun while they learn!
